Heavy Duty Resort Umbrellas

Cyclone-rated architectural umbrellas, Australian made for Pacific resorts.

Skyspan Shade manufactures architectural umbrellas engineered for cyclone winds, salt air and tropical rain. Designed and made in Australia for hotels and resorts across the Pacific since the early 1990s.

The pool deck, beach bar and terrace restaurant are where guests spend their day and where your resort earns its reputation. They are also the spaces most exposed to sun, sudden downpours, trade winds and salt air.

Skyspan Shade designs and manufactures premium commercial umbrellas for exactly these conditions. Every umbrella is custom made, certified by a structural engineer and wind rated up to 148km/h, the wind speed of a Category 1 cyclone.

Sunset Retractable Umbrella 1 1

Sunset

Retractable centre-pole umbrella. Engineered for winds up to 118km/h open, 148km/h closed.

Vista1 scaled

Vista

Retractable cantilever umbrella. Engineered for winds up to 118km/h open, 148km/h closed.

Typhoon

Typhoon

Fixed centre-pole umbrella. Engineered for winds up to 148km/h.

Certified wind ratings up to 148km/h.

Every Skyspan umbrella is certified by a structural engineer, not just described as "heavy duty". The Typhoon and Panorama are rated to 148km/h while open, equal to Category 1 cyclone winds. The retractable Sunset and Vista are rated to 118km/h open and 148km/h retracted. You get the certificate to hand to your owner, insurer or project engineer.

Custom Made To Order

Each umbrella is made to order at Skyspan's Gold Coast factory, a short shipping route from the islands. Choose from 33 canopy colours and a full range of powdercoat frame colours, add your resort branding, and include factory-fitted wiring for heaters and speakers. The team that designs your umbrella also builds and supports it.

Marine-grade hardware and a 100% waterproof architectural canopy.

All hardware is marine-grade 316 stainless steel, and cables are concealed inside the frame. The canopy is Serge Ferrari Soltis Proof 502, a UPF 50+ waterproof architectural membrane with strong resistance to UV, wind and rain. When a canopy eventually needs refreshing, you replace the canopy, not the umbrella.

Choosing Resort Shade That Survives the South Pacific.

What to look for in commercial resort umbrellas:

A true commercial umbrella is a small engineered structure. When you compare options, ask for these six things.

  1. A certified wind rating. Ask for an engineer’s certificate that states the rated wind speed, and whether that rating applies with the umbrella open or closed.
  2. Marine-grade materials. Hardware should be 316 stainless steel, the grade used on boats, with a quality powdercoat finish on the frame.
  3. A waterproof, UV-resistant canopy. An architectural membrane keeps tables dry in a downpour and holds its colour in strong sun.
  4. Safe, simple operation. One staff member should be able to open, lock and close each umbrella without strain.
  5. Design flexibility. Sizes, shapes, colours and branding should fit your property, not the other way round.
  6. Replaceable parts. A canopy you can replace on site extends the life of the whole structure.

How Skyspan is built for it:

Skyspan Shade has designed and manufactured commercial umbrellas on the Gold Coast since the early 1990s. The range was developed for the cyclone-prone, salt-heavy coastline of Queensland, which shares its climate with much of the Pacific.

Engineered and wind rated. Every umbrella comes with an Engineer Wind Rating Certification. The Typhoon and Panorama are rated to 148km/h while open. The retractable Sunset and Vista are rated to 118km/h open and 148km/h when retracted. A 148km/h rating covers winds found in a Category 1 cyclone.

Made for salt air. All hardware is marine-grade 316 stainless steel. Custom cast alloy base plates add strength at the point of highest load, and all cables are concealed inside the frame, away from weather and guests.

Waterproof architectural canopy. Skyspan canopies use Serge Ferrari Soltis Proof 502, a premium waterproof membrane with excellent resistance to UV, wind and rain. It comes in 33 colours and is made from 100% recycled PET yarns. Canopies are replaceable and can be recycled at end of life.

Easy Wind operation. Retractable models use a rack and pinion gear with an anti-jam crank, so opening and closing is fast and light. A lever locks the canopy open for safety. The handle is removable, which stops guests from operating the umbrella.

Integrated services. Electrical wiring can be fitted at the factory for heaters, lighting and speakers, so there are no exposed cables on the deck.

Why Umbrellas Often Fail

Can Skyspan umbrellas stay up during a cyclone?

Skyspan Shade umbrellas are engineer certified for winds up to 148km/h, which covers Category 1 cyclone conditions. The Typhoon and Panorama carry that rating while open. The retractable Sunset and Vista are rated to 118km/h open and 148km/h retracted, so they should be closed when severe weather is forecast. We recommend the right model based on the wind region and exposure of your site.

Skyspan umbrellas are built for coastal sites. All hardware is marine-grade 316 stainless steel, frames are powdercoated, and cables are concealed inside the structure. A simple freshwater rinse as part of routine grounds maintenance keeps salt from building up and the finish looking new.

They are fully waterproof. Skyspan Shade canopies are made with Serge Ferrari Soltis Proof 502, an architectural membrane with excellent resistance to UV, wind and rain. Guests stay dry and service continues through tropical downpours, which shade cloth and standard canvas cannot offer.

Yes. Skyspan Shade supplies resorts across the South Pacific from its Gold Coast factory. Each umbrella ships with engineering certification and footing details so your local builder or maintenance team can install it. Contact us with your site details and we will quote the umbrellas, freight to your nearest port and lead time.

Yes. Every Skyspan Shade commercial umbrella is made to order. You choose the size and shape, one of 33 canopy colours and a powdercoat frame colour, and we can add your resort branding. Options include factory-fitted electrical wiring for heaters and speakers, outdoor blinds on the Panorama, and portable Skyspan Cube bases for some models.

Yes. The Skyspan Shade retractable umbrellas, such as the Sunset and Vista models, are very easy to operate. Maintenance is as simple as a regular clean with fresh water. We don’t recommend using a water blaster as this can damage the canopy.

As resort operators continue looking for ways to improve guest experiences and maximise the return on existing assets, commercial shade solutions are playing a bigger role than ever.

Durability has become a major consideration, particularly as many businesses look to align purchasing decisions with broader sustainability goals. Skyspan Shade products can be refurbished, repaired and eventually recycled which is increasingly attractive compared with disposable alternatives.
